Tree-Tastic Community Event: Celebrating the Beauty of Adelaide’s Trees

This event is an opportunity for us to take a moment to celebrate significant law reforms and community efforts in protecting our precious trees. The desperately needed reforms to the Planning Codes were enacted by the South Australian Government in May 2024. This has been an extraordinary effort from building the evidence base and mobilising community led by the Conservation Council SA, and we are very excited about celebrating this milestone with you. BioBlitz workshop for citizen science leaders
– Oaklands Education Centre
From the experienced team who helped found the globally successful event, the Great Southern BioBlitz, join us for an engaging and informative BioBlitz workshop at the Oaklands Education Centre. The workshop will include an introduction to the iNaturalist platform, and managing a BioBlitz before, during and after the event. We will undertake our own mock BioBlitz at the wetlands, so please dress appropriately on the day. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of how to effectively run BioBlitz events. This workshop is designed to be accessible to all experience levels and aims to foster inclusivity and collaboration among participants. It is ideal for citizen science leaders such as teachers, councils, friends of groups, organisations, government agencies, and other stakeholders involved or interested in environmental work. Whether you are a seasoned project leader or new to citizen science project management, you will find valuable insights and practical tools to enhance your biodiversity monitoring projects. Beach Explorers - Summer School Holidays
– Largs Bay Beach
Bring your family down to Largs Beach in the January school holidays and learn all about the amazing things we can find right here on our local beaches. Join local shell expert Peter Hunt and marine ecologist Dr Sue Murray-Jones on this guided beach combing session. We’ll explore the tide line and jetty pylons, learning about the things we discover. This is a fun way to learn about the beach environment through a hands-on experience. This beach session is suitable for families with children of all ages. Adults and older children will learn so much about our local beach environment, whilst younger children will enjoy exploring the beach. Please note that children must be accompanied by a guardian and be appropriately supervised by you at all times. Adults are also welcome to attend without children, as there is so much all of us can discover and learn about our local environment. Meeting Spot: Meet in the carpark to the north of the Largs Bay sailing club (on Lady Gowrie Drive, opposite Wigley Street). Please meet 5 minutes before the session starts.We will then wander along the beach towards the Largs Bay Jetty, before returning around 10.30am. What to bring:

Nature Journaling
– Lartelare Park
Take some time to find some stillness at the start of the new year and join us in beautiful Lartelare Park alongside the Port River and have a go at nature journaling. Connect with nature while you learn to sketch, make notes and record your surrounds in a gentle, fun and supported way. Facilitated by Jenny Deans, this workshop invites you to explore your creativity and find some mindful moments considering whats growing around you, while developing your artistic skills. No experience necessary - this relaxing workshop will introduce you to seeing nature in different ways. From complete beginners to the most experience artist, everyone will find new ways to connect through this session. All equipment provided and you will receive a notebook to take home with you and continue your nature journaling practice. While this event is aimed at adults, families are also welcome to attend. Children will need to have a concession ticket, must be accompanied by a guardian and be appropriately supervised at all times. The workshop is generally suited to children over 8 years but may suit some younger children. Lartelare is a beautiful, waterfront space to explore, observe and reflect. Lartelare was designed as a place to tell local Aboriginal stories and to recognise the birthplace of Lartelare. Full of local native plants, it is a space that combines indigenous culture, art, history, nature and play. Parking is available under the Hart Street Bridge, accessed from Wirra Drive (note the nearest public toilets are a 5 minute walk away). Please dress for the weather and remember to bring a hat, sunscreen, water bottle and snacks. In the morning, by the river, with shade from the bridge above, we should be protected from the worst of the summer heat. Discovery Walk - Wara Wayingga/Tennyson Dunes
– Inlet Reserve
Discovery Walks are designed to connect you with the nature and community and are offered by Port Environment Centre in the cooler months of the year, with a range of walking lengths and locations. We invite you to join us for a walk to Wara Wayingga - Tennyson Dunes. Learn about this fragile ecosystem and the valued work of volunteers to educate and protect by restoring natural habitats and minimising threats to the plants and animals that call this place home. This walk is approx. 5km over a 2 hour period and a good level of fitness is needed. Initially we walk 30 mins one way to Wara Wayingga - Tennyson Dunes Conservation Reserve where we meet up with local volunteers from the Tennyson Dunes Group to learn about their current program and the biodiversity within the dunes. We return along a different route on dune trails back to Inlet Reserve. What to wear/bring: - Comfortable walking shoes - Sun protection (hat, suncream, sunglasses) - Raincoat (if wet weather is forecast) - Filled water bottle - Snack/fruit - Backpack or bag to carry loose items - Personal items such as medications eg puffers - Camera (optional) Participants under the age of 18 years must have a registered ticket and be accompanied by an adult. Cancellation: We reserve the right to cancel if the weather forecast predicts unsafe conditions for our leaders and the public eg severe weather or thunderstorms – we will notify you with as much notice as possible should this happen. Please note that numbers are limited and everyone must book to attend please let us know if you have booked and then are unable to attend please stay home if you are unwell The Port Environment Centre is seeded by Green Adelaide. Attendee information may be used for follow up evaluation, in order to assess the longer term impacts of our events. Here’s what’s happening: 4:00 – 5:30pm Nature Art – Get creative with Leaf monoprints 4:30 – 5:30pm Eco-Discussion – Topic this month -New report slaps an official price tag on Australia’s precious natural assets The end of capitalism – or the end of civilisation? The choice could be that stark 5:30 – 7:30pm | Plant Propagation with Greening Rosewater Loop – Get hands-on with propagating native plants and hear the inspiring story behind this local greening project. Plus! We’ll have a Produce & Clothes Share Light supper provided Bring the family – it’s FREE, all materials are provided and everyone is welcome. ‘Push / Pull’ – Nature as Collaborator + Plant Swap
– Adelaide Contemporary Experimental (ACE)
Join us for an afternoon of artist talks, green-thinking and community connection, exploring how artists collaborate with plants, landscapes and more-than-human worlds. Shenshen Zheng will share her experiences working with peas (Pisum sativum) in her slow-moving plant performance Peas, Shoots and Leaves. Trudy Tandberg will speak about her work with limestone, saws and soil in Cleaving the Woakwine. Artist and ecologist Amber Cronin joins Stephanie Dodderidge and Danni Zuvela for an open conversation on ecologically engaged art in South Australia. To close the day, Heidi Kenyon will lead a casual discussion (and potential experiment) in guerilla gardening. We’ll also be hosting a plant swap – bring a cutting and take home something new! Try Nature Painting using the sun! **Firstival Event**
– Campbelltown Public Library
Cyanotype Printmaking Workshop - This workshop will introduce participants to the art of cyanotype printing (a photographic printing process using the sun that produces a cyan-blue (often referred to as blueprint) image on paper or fabric) teaching them how to create their own cyanotype prints. Under instruction from artist Ann Whitby participants will also learn about the pioneering work of Anna Atkins, the first person to publish a book with photographs using the cyanotype process. For beginners and those interested in photography, printmaking, or alternative processes. Suitable for adults only. Please note safety equipment will be worn during this session and due to the need for some sun, the session may need to be rescheduled or adjusted if significant rain is forecast. By attending this event you consent for you, and any persons you are responsible for, being photographed and/or filmed and agree that the City of Campbelltown may use the resulting photographs and film for promotional purposes, including by publishing them in print and other media. Composting and Beyond
– Payneham Community Centre
In this fun, informative and free workshop with award winning sustainable gardener, Alan Shepard, we will look at new and old methods of successfully creating compost every time. Making compost is easy and the benefits include reducing waste, helping the environment and enriching the soil. Book a spot to learn how to make compost and get your soil summer ready, sustainably. One Planet Market is held from 9am – 12 noon (10am-1pm in winter) on the 3rd Saturday of each month at Payneham Community Centre. We welcome people to come and sell, buy or exchange garden produce, home-made food and second hand goods. Mischief in Motion: Wild and Weedy Plants (Botanic Garden Guided Tour)
– Wisteria Arbours, Adelaide Botanic Garden
Learn about plants that were once considered useful, now known as Wild and Weedy Plants growing in Adelaide Botanic Garden. Join the State Herbarium’s resident weeds Botanist, Chris Brodie, on a leisurely stroll around Adelaide Botanic Garden for a tour of some weedy and wild, mischievous and unruly plant species. Many of these plants were introduced to Australia by migrants from overseas as garden plants, a source of food, or as medicinal plants. In this Nature Festival event, you will discover the mischievous ways and negative impacts of some of these now wild and weedy, or once loved plant species. There will be lots of opportunities for discussion and questions as Chris shares his expertise and knowledge. Note: This tour may contain information which could be confronting to younger audiences, parental guidance is recommended. About our Weeds Botanist Chris is the Weeds Botanist for the State Herbarium of South Australia and has been for over 15 years now. Chris is interested in the naturalised (also known as ‘weed’) flora of South Australia. He works closely with stakeholders, including Landscape officers, biodiversity staff across government and NGOs, and other land managers, to identify, collect and document the naturalised flora (weeds) of South Australia. Chris is the point of contact for anyone with a suspected new weed species that requires confirmation or identification. The 3D Pollen Experience (Botanic Garden Special Tour)
– Friends' Gate, Adelaide Botanic Garden
Uncover the hidden world of pollen and the science behind the flowering plants of the Adelaide Botanic Garden. Join Dr. Andrew Thornhill on a t our through the Adelaide Botanic Garden to delve into the hidden world of pollen and its vital role in plant reproduction. Pollen is produced by all flowering plants and comes in lots of different shapes. Over millions of years pollen has evolved and adapted to help flowering plants spread around the world. Using 3D printed pollen models, on thousand times the size of real pollen, Andrew will show and explain and how pollen shape can be used in plant classification and to understand their role in plant reproduction. There is a whole world of hidden shapes that we be revealed through this tour, and plenty of opportunities for discussion during the walk! About Dr. Andrew Thornhill Andrew is the Director of the N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium and Senior Lecturer of Plant Systematics at the University of New England in Armidale, New South Wales. Prior to his current job, Andrew worked at the State Herbarium of South Australia and the University of Adelaide.
