Petition: Permanent safety for refugees
through Online Event
Everyone deserves to live in safety with their families, and to have a place to call home. But around 700 people who have lived in the Australian community for years still don’t have the right to stay here permanently. They survived offshore detention in Nauru and Papua New Guinea, but under our migration laws, they are classified as ‘transitory persons’ and are not allowed to apply for any permanent visa. They currently live here on insecure, short-term visas, but there is nothing transitory or temporary about the lives they have built. They have raised children and families, found jobs and become part of our community. Many have close family members, including children and spouses, who are Australian citizens or permanent residents. The vast majority have already been recognised as refugees. Australia is their home. It is time for the Albanese Government to abandon these cruel policies from the past, and focus on real solutions for the future. Everyone who was previously held in offshore detention in Nauru or Papua New Guinea should be immediately granted a permanent visa. People stuck in visa limbo are speaking out, sharing their experiences and calling on the Albanese Government to act. And they are asking all of us to stand with them. For over 13 years, the Human Rights Law Centre has supported people and families who have survived offshore detention through legal action, public advocacy and law reform. We are proud to stand with our clients as they fight to remain in the homes they have built in Australia. The Human Rights Law Centre is hosting this petition together with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and GetUp, to show the Albanese Government it is time to let people stay for good. |

June SAGE
– Youth Inc
SAGE is a community for all folks who love and care for our planet. Our monthly gatherings are a space to nourish each other, so that we can nourish our world. Join us for an evening of delicious food, hearty discussion and new skills. The night will start with a shared meal, then we will move into community announcements, then into open space workshops, with lots of space for social breaks throughout. — On Sunday June 28th, we’re moving into our brand new home and we are SO STOKED about it! SAGE will now be held at YouthInc, an alternative school for 18-25 yr olds in a cool converted church on Pulteney St. We’re keen to build a mutual relationship with the generous YouthInc crew and help make the space our own for the long haul. Of course, SAGE is still (& will always be) for all ages. Young or old, parent or pensioner, first-timer or seasoned activist - everyone is welcome. So, to celebrate moving to our new home, the theme this month is “PLAY: Come over to our place” 🏡 The night will be created entirely by the community - anyone can bring a workshop or a discussion idea. And if you’ve got a mate who could run a good workshop on this theme, call them up & invite them! Some ideas: ✊️ Maybe “play” makes you think of playing with the rules, playing with new worlds and systems. 🏡 Maybe “play” takes you back to your roots and reminds you of childhood games you could bring 🏸 Maybe you have an idea for an unfinished workshop that you want to experiment with running 🎷 Maybe you want to bring an instrument, or an art form ‼️Or something else entirely! As always, you can bring a workshop NOT about the theme too - all ideas welcome. – Some other things you might want to bring… 🍲 A plate of food to share for the potluck dinner 🫒 Veggies or seedlings for the produce swap 🧵 Something to mend at the mending corner 🌟 Snergy to help shape the new space and make it our own!! Run through of how the night will (roughly) go… 4:30-5:15pm: Arriving, Sharing food. 5:15-5:45pm: Welcome, Community Announcements. 5:45-7:45pm: Open Space Workshop Sessions (including a break for tea/chats). 7:45-8.00pm: Closing Circle. All welcome. Come anytime that suits you. A new accessibility guide for YouthInc will posted soon. See you there! |

Why does our wildlife need our help? Our wildlife populations face many dangers as their habitat decreases and they are forced to live closer to us. The biggest dangers are cats, dogs, cars, poisons and loss of native habitat. [Free Workshop]: Holding Space for Suicide Distress
– Intersect Coworking Office
About the workshop: In many spaces suicide distress is discussed through a risk-averse lens that centres organisational safety over human connection. Part of having a more human approach to supporting people starts with addressing common myths and misconceptions about suicide, as well as approaching the support in a way that upholds dignity, autonomy, and human rights. This workshop aims to build the skills of attendees, is built on the foundations of lived experience wisdom and is facilitated by people with lived experience of suicide distress. Who this workshop is for: This workshop is for lived experience community members that want to learn skills around more compassionately supporting people in distress who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. At LELAN we define lived experience as having been through mental health issues and/or distress, social issues, or injustice that is so significant we have to have to reimagine and redefine ourselves, our place in the world, and our future plans [Louise Byrne & Til Wykes, 2020]. Themes covered:
Structure of the day: This is an interactive facilitated workshop that will include presentation of information by the facilitator(s), large and small group discussions and reflective exercises. The knowledge, skills and diverse experiences of participants will be drawn on to create an environment of dialogue, shared learning and community. Workshop facilitator: The lead facilitator for this workshop will be Emrys Temple-Heald (He/Him), Peer Training Coordinator. You can learn more about the LELAN team at www.lelan.org.au/our-people. *If you have not registered for the ‘Sharing Safely and for Influence’ online module, or have not completed this previously with LELAN, we encourage you to do so. The ‘Sharing Safely and for Influence’ content will encourage reflection on how we manage our own needs and boundaries but will also explore strategies for caring for others when sharing our stories. This will provide a foundation to work from leading into the workshop days. For more information or to register for this online please click [here]. |
