Leading the Nation an in-conversation event : South Australian Gay Law Reform 1972-1975
– State Library of South Australia, Hetzel Lecture Theatre
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of male homosexual acts in South Australia, join us for a panel discussion led by Greens MLC Robert Simms, with historian Tim Reeves and historian and 1970s gay activist Will Sergeant OAM. The session will delve into the fascinating story of how South Australia led the nation when it enacted gay law reform, exactly 50 years to the day on 17 September 1975. We will be officially launching a new online exhibition, ‘Leading the Nation: South Australian Gay Law Reform 1972–1975’, a collaboration between Tim Reeves, State Library of South Australia and the History Trust of South Australia, which tracks the tragic death of Dr Duncan, the process of legislative change and its ongoing impact and legacy. After the panel discussion you are invited to view a special display, ‘The Life and Death of Dr Duncan 1930-1972’, along with an opportunity to purchase books by Tim Reeves and Will Sergeant. |
