Protect Protest Rally & March Parliament House

Join us at Parliament House on Thursday 16th May as we launch a campaign to repeal the undemocratic SA anti-protest laws on the first anniversary of their introduction.

Passed by the South Australian Parliament in just 20 minutes, and without consultation, these laws escalated penalties in the Summary Offences Act for obstructing public places from $750 to $50,000 (or 3 months) imprisonment. These new laws are part of a concerning trend nationwide of introducing legislation to repress protest. They broaden the scope of offences that police can use and further criminalise peaceful community activism.

Protests and social movements have delivered our civil and political rights. Tolerance of dissent and even civil disobedience are hallmarks of a strong democracy. History has vindicated many acts of disobedience, including ‘Votes for Women’, the global suffrage movement; American Civil Rights Movement; Builder’s Labourers Federation Green Bans; and Vietnam Moratorium marches that blocked Adelaide intersections. With implied threats of extreme fines and jail time, the new laws have had a chilling and repressive effect on protest. This often disproportionately impacts those with marginalised identities, who so often have played a key role in bringing about social change.

The South Australian community deserves laws that are the result of deliberation and consultation, not policy on the run, so we’re calling on the SA Parliament to go back to drawing board and reconsider them.

[Protest] Stop Peter Duttons Nuclear Reactor Threats Hotel Grand Chancellor

The federal parliament’s nuclear power inquiry is holding a hearing in Adelaide next week, on Thursday, Dec 5. Port Augusta is one of the sites being targeted for nuclear reactors by the Dutton Coalition. And wherever the reactors are built, there will be more pressure for nuclear waste dumping in SA. Please join us outside the inquiry from 8am to 9am to voice our opposition to Dutton’s plan to build nuclear reactors, to prolong and expand the use of fossil fuels, and to derail the renewable energy transition. Please bring placards and banners.

Also, it would be great to have a good turnout inside the hearing, beginning at 9am. The hearing schedule will be posted online and will include speakers for and against Dutton’s nuclear plans.

The Working Women’s Centre SA is bringing together a collective of activists to help organise Reclaim the Night 2025. Our first meeting is on Monday 25th August from 5:30pm to 7pm at an accessible CBD venue. Please register to attend and we will provide you with the venue details and further info for the meeting. Can’t come to the first meeting? You can also register for info about future meetings and plans.

Reclaim the Night (RTN) is a global activist event that calls for the elimination of gendered violence and harassment, an end to victim-blaming, and for actions to build safe and just communities.

In 2025, the Reclaim the Night march and rally falls on Friday 31st October.

Let’s come together to:

Stop sexual harassment and violence – on the streets, in our homes and in our workplaces
Defend and uplift trans young people and their access to healthcare and community – everyone deserves safety, autonomy and freedom
Demand full decriminalisation of sex work – it’s time for change in South Australia
Stop silencing victim-survivors – our voices will be heard!

All women and gender-diverse people are welcome to join the collective, including workers and students. There are many ways to help out!

Our RTN collective is strictly trans inclusive and sex worker inclusive.

Santos We are Watching You Leak & Sneak 60 Flinders St Adelaide

LEAKY & SNEAKY : Santos has been caught red-handed using a giant gas tank which has been leaking at least 184 kg of methane per hour for around 20 years at the Darwin Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plant.

The NT Environment Protection Authority (NTEPA) approved the tank in 2020 : the leak was reported just hours later while Santos was buying the tank. NTEPA Chair is Paul Vogel: on ABC on Sept 3rd he described the methane emissions from the leak as “insignificant” and the fire risk as “low or negligible”. He DIDN’T say that he’s a paid lobbyist for an organisation that works for gas industry clients. Santos kept quiet & continued to use the leaky tank with no penalty or requirement to fix it. Santos is aiming for massive profits from its Barossa gas field – with its extensive undersea piping north of Australia … What could possibly go wrong? And the results – more carbon emissions heating the atmosphere and endangering life, livelihoods and health across the globe.

Come along for coffee or lunch nearby.
