OUR ‘SAAY’ 2024: SA Aboriginal Youth (SAAY) Public Speaking Competition Finals U City

The OUR ‘SAAY’ Public Speaking Competition encourages Aboriginal children and young people to raise their voices on important topics and matters in Aboriginal affairs. Entrants participated in Heats across the state, speaking on topics such as family, culture, racism, language, BLM, money, social media and country.

12 Finalists will come together at Our ‘SAAY’ to participate in the final round where the judging panel will announce this year’s winners.

Low Key A Haus Party (Youth Takeover Event Year 7 to Year 12) Hahndorf Academy

A Youth Week takeover of the Hahndorf Academy gallery… organised by young people, for young people.

We’re turning the gallery into a full hangout / rave / creative chaos zone for one night only! Come meet new people, try something new, or just mess around with your friends and make some memories.

Expect live music, games, art, and heaps of spaces to explore. What’s happening on the night

Basically… the entire gallery will be activated with something happening in every room.

Whether you’re here to dance, learn a new skill, chill out or just grab some free food and hang – this night is for you.

We know there aren’t many free, safe places for young people to hang out anymore, so this is all about creating a night where you can just show up, be yourself, and have a good time.

Bring your friends or come solo — you’ll find your people here.

Make a badge and bag charm with Tikari at Fabrik (10-16yo) Fabrik Arts + Heritage, Old Woollen Mill, Lobethal

In this school holiday workshop First Nations artist Tikari Rigney will show you how to be fabulously creative with felt, collage and fabric. After drawing your imaginative designs, you will cut, stick, layer and hand sew them into a bunch of sweet little bag friends, tags or felt badges.

About the workshop host

Tikari is a Kaurna, Narrunga, Ngarrindjeri artist and poet living on unceded Kaurna land. Tikari makes things with their hands and writes things, poems mainly, so they don’t forget, remember how to feel and understand themself.

What you need to know

Workshop fee includes all materials, use of tools and equipment. Materials include an abundant variety of felt and other textile materials.

Suitable for beginners 10 to 16 years of age

Painting Botanicals with Aboriginal artist Aunty Ros Cameron Fabrik Arts + Heritage, Old Woollen Mill, Lobethal

In this school holiday workshop give your kids the opportunity to connect to culture with First Nations artist Aunty Ros Cameron. They will paint on natural materials such as gum leaves, gumnuts and rocks using bright and colourful Posca pens. Ros will also show your budding crafters how to thread gumnuts to make amazing simple jewellery. The afternoon’s focus will be on mindful making, cultural symbols and connection to nature.

About the workshop host

Aunty Ros Cameron is an Aboriginal artist (Eastern and Northern Arrente) and cultural educator who has worked with children, families and communities, sharing stories and cultural knowledge through art, storytelling and connection to nature.

What you need to know

Workshop fee includes all materials, use of tools and equipment. 

Suitable for beginners 7 to 15 years of age
