How to improve habitat for native birds in urban areas Australia’s population is steadily increasing, prompting the need for new houses, shops and roads. Whilst these developments are important for our community, they may have a negative impact on the birds that share our suburbs. So, how do birds respond to urban development? Why do some species cope better than others? And what can we do to better support the more sensitive species?

We look forward to hearing Dr Jacinta Humphrey insights on what makes a residential street, urban park or private garden, bird-friendly, whilst sharing space with you all virtually over a soothing cuppa!

About the Speaker

Dr Jacinta Humphrey // (she/her)
Urban Ecologist and Postdoctoral Researcher with the ICON Science group at RMIT University. Her work explores the application of Biodiversity Sensitive Urban Design and aims to guide the creation of multi-functional spaces where people and nature can thrive. She also monitors the Birrarung Trial Floating Wetlands, a series of artificial habitat islands installed in the Yarra River-Birrarung, on behalf of The University of Melbourne.

Our CNC Routing for Beginners workshop is a perfect blend of hands-on woodwork and digital fabrication. You’ll learn to create a timber birdbox, and how to setup, operate, and finish a CNC routed part. Created from Western Red Cedar timber, your birdbox will look great, and last for decades.

Join us for the 2026 Bio·R Planting Festival at Frahns Farm, as we work together to reconstruct habitat for biodiversity!

We are continuing this year’s festival with two big weekends at Frahns Farm. Our goal over these four days is to plant 32,000 native seedlings, creating vital habitat for wildlife.

Bio·R is a South Australian grassroots charity dedicated to reconstructing habitats for native wildlife. Our ambitious long-term goal is to reconstruct 100 hectares per year by 2032, and 1000 hectares per year by 2045.

To manage catering and eliminate food waste, your ticket covers tea, coffee, water, a delicious vegetarian lunch, and afternoon tea.

Adult (Full Contribution): $30 Adult (Partial Contribution): $15 Teen (13-17 years): $15 Child (0-12 years): Free (registration required) Note: Ticket sales close at 12:00 PM (midday) prior to each weekend, so that we can provide our caterers with accurate numbers and dietary requirements in advance.
