The CIPX project invites Indigenous photographers from around the world to create portraits of members of their local communit ies using the nineteenth-century tintype process. Kaurna artists Damien Shen and James Tylor have contributed to this contemporary project\, whi ch seeks to recontextualise early photographic documentation of Kaurna p eople produced by European colonists and anthropologists in South Austra lia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \;\n \;\n These CIPX portraits differ significantly from earlier images of Aborigi nal people taken by Europeans. The project is designed to prioritise age ncy and respect for contemporary Indigenous sitters. Historically\, Euro pean colonial photographers controlled the visual representation of Abor iginal subjects and retained ownership of the original images. \;\n&# 13\;\nThe CIPX process centres the Indigenous sitter's autonomy. Partici pants have control over how they are represented\, and the original tint ype photographs are returned to the sitter.
